As we know, there are many children who are born in different time, so people separate children based on their birth order as oldest child, middle child, youngest child and the only child in families. The passage “How Your Birth Order Influences Your Life Adjustment” by Lucille Forer, talks about the fate of four kinds of children in their family. As an oldest child, he/she is more responsible, because parents have higher expectation of him/her. On the other hand, a middle child is less responsible because he/she has brothers or sisters who can help middle child. However, the youngest child is the free child, because many parents will most love the youngest child. As a result, many people will care him/her who without do as much as his/her brothers or sisters do. Finally, the only child is different, because he/she just is one person that no siblings can help him/her. Therefore, it makes the only child is more independent and has more abilities to take his/her responsibilities.
In my opinion, I totally agree with Lucille Forer’s ideas about four kinds of children, especially about the oldest child and youngest child. In fact, that connects with my personal life. In my family, I am the oldest child and I have a younger sister. No matter what kind of situation is, oldest child as me always take more responsible than the youngest child. For example, when I go home after school, I need to clear the house and cook for dinner. It’s my responsibility that I do it every day. After that, I also need to help my younger sister to teach her how to do homework. This is an oldest sister’s role. In contrast, my younger sister just needs to finish her responsibility which is doing homework, so that she has free time to play. Thus, oldest child and youngest child have big difference and responsibilities in a family.
In addition, Lucille Forer describes the only child who will be more independent and that also is correct. For instance, one of my friends is the only child in her family. When I went to her house, I was surprised, because her parents went to work so she needed to care herself as much as possible. She learned as many things as she could, such as cooking, clearing house and washing clothes. I appreciated that she could take care of herself without her parents’ help. She was very independent. Therefore, it certainly supports the author’s view that “When my parents are around, I have no one to turn to for help. So I’d better learn to take care of myself as much as possible.”
In conclusion, different birth orders of children decide different roles and responsibilities in their family. It also shows different characteristics such as being more capable or less capable, or more independent or dependent, so that determine every child’s future will also be different.
